Keyboard shortcuts

Every binding Emet responds to, in one place. Ctrl means Cmd on a Mac unless a table says otherwise. Most of the visual editor’s bindings are Tiptap’s defaults and most of the Markdown editor’s are CodeMirror’s, so if you’ve used either before, your fingers already know a lot of this.

Everywhere#

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+S Save the open entry (does nothing if there’s nothing to save)
Ctrl+. Toggle focus mode (needs an entry open)
Esc Leave focus mode, unless a dialog is open
Ctrl+F Jump to the entry list filter, when you’re not inside an editor
Ctrl+K Search every section by title or body text, when you’re not inside an editor

Note that Esc leaving focus mode includes the Esc you press to get out of insert mode in Vim, so in focus mode you’ll want jj instead.

Text formatting#

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+B Bold
Ctrl+I Italic
Ctrl+U Underline
Ctrl+Shift+S Strikethrough
Ctrl+E Inline code
Ctrl+Shift+H Highlight
Ctrl+, Subscript
Ctrl+Shift+. Superscript

Underline, highlight, subscript and superscript are only available on sites that allow raw HTML (see Raw HTML); elsewhere these keys do nothing.

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+Alt+0 Paragraph
Ctrl+Alt+1 to Ctrl+Alt+6 Heading levels 1 to 6
Ctrl+Shift+B Blockquote
Ctrl+Alt+C Code block
Ctrl+Shift+8 Bullet list
Ctrl+Shift+7 Numbered list
Ctrl+Shift+9 Task list
Tab / Shift+Tab Indent or outdent a list item
Shift+Enter Line break

The heading dropdown only offers levels 1 to 3, but the keys cover all six.

Alignment#

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+Shift+L Align left
Ctrl+Shift+E Centre
Ctrl+Shift+R Align right
Ctrl+Shift+J Justify

Alignment is written as raw HTML, so these shortcuts are also only active on sites that allow it.

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+K Open the link popover
Ctrl+Z Undo
Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z Redo

AI#

These only exist when AI is enabled in cms.yaml.

Shortcut Action
Ctrl+J Open the inline AI menu for the selection
Ctrl+Shift+A Open the AI chat panel

Both are configurable:

ai:
  shortcuts:
    inlineAction: Mod-J
    openChat: Mod-Shift-A

Mod is Tiptap’s name for Ctrl or Cmd, whichever the platform uses. See Inline actions and Chat.

Vim mode#

With Vim switched on, the standard Vim bindings apply and these are added:

:w Save the entry
Ctrl+V Visual block mode (Ctrl+Q if your browser takes Ctrl+V)

Those use Ctrl on macOS too. See Markdown mode for more.
